In the name of God, Amen, 26 September 1514, I RICHARD BRENCHESLE of the parish of Bicknor in the diocese of Canterbury, being in sound mind and memory, make my testament in this manner. First I bequeath my soul to God the Father Omnipotent, to the blessed Virgin Mary and to all the saints in heaven, and my body to be buried in the parish church of St. James the Apostle at Bicknor, near the altar of St. Cosmos and Damian.

Item, to Sir Alan Baxter, rector of the said church a light for St. James, the patron saint of the said church. Item, 4d for a wax candle for lighting and burning before the images of Sts Cosmos and Damian during divine services and when mass is being solemnised. Item, for the repair of the said church, and especially for the windows 6/8d. Item, on the day of my burial 13/4d. item, 10/- for celebrating my trental at the altar of Sts Cosms and Damianin the church at Bicknor.

Witnesses: Sir Alan Baxter, rector of the said church of Bicknor, Richard Meter, William Bunton, Thomas Duke, with others especially summoned to a private meeting.

This codicil is annexed to my testament. The last will of me, RICHARD BRENCHELE aforesaid, made in the presence of witnesses, day, year and place as above. First, I will that RICHARD BRENCHELEY son of WILLIAM my son, shall have my messuage called Le Olyverys and 26 acres of land lying near the said house, being in the parish of Broomfield and I will that WILLIAM father of RICHARD should have the profits of the said house and 26 acres of land until the said RICHARD reaches the age of 12 years, with which he shall maintain and keep the said RICHARD at school for a (?) period of (?) three years. And I will that the said WILLIAM should occupy the said messuage........the above mentioned church from the profits and increments. I will that WILLIAM CROMPE of Otham, JOHN BENTON and THOMAS DUKE of Stockbury, my feoffees should deliver the rights and seisin to RICHARD when he reaches 21 years, and release them to him, his heirs and assigns and I will that if the said RICHARD should have no heirs of his body lawfully born, then the said WILLIAM should have the said house and 26 acres of land for himself and his heirs and assigns.

Item, to REGINALDE BRENCHELEY £10 in manner and form as follows, viz: 40/- on the day of St Luke the Evangelist next following the day of my burial, and on the same feast in the following year, and soon the same day every year until the whole sum of £10 has been paid.

Item, to my daughter JULIANA, 5 marks, viz: on the day of her marriage 50/- and on the same date of the following year 50/-.

Item, 10 ewes to the said JULIANA. item, to my daughter JOAN 54/4d in the same form and manner as above.

Item, to ALICE FLYNT, my servant, 40/-, 20/- on the day of her marriage and 20/- on the same day a year later.

And if it should happen that JULIANA, JOAN and ALICE or any one of them should depart from this life before marriage, then I will that the said legacy of the one or ones who die should remain in the hands of WILLIAM BRENCHELEY.

Item, to AGNES my wife 13/4d to be paid twice yearly until the death of the said AGNES, viz: at the feasts of St John the Baptist and Christmas. This on condition that the said AGNES shall hold me, RICHARD and my heirs and executors free and released from all and singular conditions, contracts, payments and obligations whatever until the day of my death. And if it shall happen that the said sum of 13/4d should be in arrears, in part or in whole, then I will that the said AGNES should be allowed to enter and distrain upon the revenue, profits, farms and reversions of all and singular of the following lands, viz: 16 acres of land at Houtham, Hothfield,(?) Colysfole,(?) Damshawr, (?) Reed and Collisfield croft, being in the parish of Wormshill......

(The next part is nearly illegible but seems to state that Agnes should be able to distrain unhindered upon the said profits until her legacy has been fully paid with damages)

.....Item, I will that my feoffees should deliver.....seisin to the said William.........if the legators.

I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM BRENCHLEY whom I appoint my sole executor, and WILLIAM CROMPE the overseer of this my will. Year and month as above.

The above testament was proved 17 January 1514/15 and proved etc. Administration of all etc. granted to the executors named in the testament, first being duly sworn.

1. RICHARD1 BRENCHLEY1,2 was born Abt. 1440 in Kent3,4, and died 1514 in Bicknor, Kent5,6. He married AGNES6 Abt. 1465.

Notes for RICHARD BRENCHLEY:

The parish church in Bicknor is made of chalk with a flint exterior. It was significantly rebuilt in the 19th century. Not surprisingly, all trace of the 16th century and Brenchley has gone. However, the church is interesting and despite no electricity it is used once or twice a month (candles). Richard is buried in Bicknor church near the altar in Kent.
