About Richard Mentor Johnson

1804-1806 Kentucky State House of Represenatives; 1807-1819 U.S. Congressman for Kentucky; 1819-1829 U.S. Senator, Kentucky; 1829-1837 U.S. Congressman, Kentucky; 1837-1841 9th Vice-President of the United States under Martin Van Buren.


He was born in 1780, in Beargrass, Kentucky, his parents were Robert Johnson and Jemima Suggett-Johnson. He was a member of the House of Represenatives from 1807-1819, U.S. Senator from Kentucky from 1819-1829, U.S. House of Represenatives from Kentucky from 1829-1837 and Vice President of the United States under President Martin Van Buren from 1837-1841. He was elected to the U.S. House of Represenatives again in 1850, but died November 19th, 1850, two weeks into his term. He had three other brothers that served in the U.S. Senate and House of Represenatives. The Johnson Political Dynasty was very powerful and considered to be as important as the Breckinridge and Clay families during period of time in Kentucky Politics. He was never married although he had a common law wife, Julia Chinn and they had two daughters, Adaline and Imogene together.
