+ Born in Appledore, North Devon 27.Sep.1852, but "came to Newport with his parents as a young boy"

+ Educated at Roberts's school, Charles Street and afterwards at Twekesbury

+ 1864, started his sea life, at 23 passed the Board of Trade exams at Bristol

+ 27.Nov.1874 became Master Mariner, his first command as Captain being under the late Robert Gething of Newport

+ 187 joined the steamship service under Sir Robert Ropner and "traded to all parts of the world" 

+ "commanded sailing ships until 1888"

+ Appointed to Harbour Master in Newport 14.Nov. 1888 for 41 years

+ on the Pilotage Board (was Chairman), Admiralty Assessor at County Court, "Younger Brother of Trinity for services to Trinity House" (responsible for lighthouses)

FUNERAL OF MR. WILLIAM PUGSLEY. The funeral procession left Loxhore House, Maindee, the residence of the deceased, at twelve o'clock on Tuesday, en route for the family vault, in the New Cemetery.

The greatest respect was shown by the inhabitants of Maindee, the blinds being drawn in most of the houses. The following was the order of procession: — First coach, containing Revs. C. H. Bishop, A. J. 0. Lyle, and J. Rodwell, and Dr. Woollett. Six Under-bearers. Hearse, containing the body of deceased, enclosed in a shell, with a coffin of polished oak, mounted in brass, and bearing inscription on breast plate-- "William Pugsley. Died Jan. 2, 1878. Aged 72 years." Second coach, containing Mr. Anthony Pugsley Mr. James Pugsley, Mr. Thomas Pugaley, Mr! Anthony Pugsley, Jun., Mr. Richard Pugsley. Third coach, containing Mr. Anthony Pugsley, Son., Mr. Brinsmead, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Baker. Friends. The burial service was performed by the Rev. C. H. Bishop, assisted by the Rev. A. J. O. Lyle. The fuueral arrangements were entrusted to Mr. W. M. Palmer, Llanarth-street, Newport. 1
