Richard is the youngest of four children of Virginia and Roy de Souza. He traces his Goan roots to Moira, Guirim, Siolim, Mapusa, Sangolda and Socorro, Porvorim, Bardez. His ancestral surnames are: Sousa, Cunha, Lobo, Nazaré, Sá, Andrade, Sequeira, Cruz, Corrêa, Noronha, Dias, Pereira, Veloso, Mendes, Melo, Figueira, Viegas, Carrasco, Costa, Faria, Mascarenhas, Telles and Ataíde.
