Oral History and the written history by Lawrence L. Stanley, descendant of Rickles, state that Rickles descends from an Alfred Stanley for whom Stanley Valley was named. This Alfred Stanley built a cabin in Stanley Valley in 1777 in Hawkins County present day Tennessee. While Alfred was away from the cabin, cutting timbers, he heard screams and came running to find his wife and a child murdered by Indians under the direction of a red headed Indian Chief known as Benge. Stanley then sold his land and moved back to Virginia where he married again had son Rickles. No documentation has been found to support this oral history and written history.
