About Robert Harcourt, Sir, Knight, Esquire

Sir Robert Harcourt of Stanton Harcort, ect. was Steward of Oxford University, Sheriff of Leiecstershire and Warwickshire, and of Berkshire and Oxfordshire, Knight of the Shire for Oxfordshire and Berkshire and Constable of Vernon in Normandy.

Robert's feud with the Staffords began in 1448 by the killing of Richrd Stafford at Coventry. He was pardoned for this in 1450. In 1457 he was in favour with the Lancastrian Government but was denounced as a Yorkist by 1459. In 1464 he was grantewd an annuity of 300 pounds for life by the king for his services at the seige of Alnwick. He wnet to France in 1467 on embassy to King Louis XI at Rouen. In 1468 he was granted a pension of 20 pounds for life for resisting traitors in Oxfordshire. Robert married in or before 1440 to Margaret Byron, widow of Sir William Atherton and daughter of Sir John Byron of Clayton, Lancashire. ______________________________

Pg.385-386 , Robert Harcourt son of Anne Norreys & John Harcourt, husband of Agnes, died without issue. 1504-15, Thomas Nevill, Esq., and his wife, Lettice, George Gaynsford and Elizabeth, his wife, Thomas Stoner, Esq., and Katherine, his wife, and Thomas Bekyngham and Ellen, his wife sued William Grevile, Sarjeant-at-law, William Harcourt, of Bosworth, and others, feoffees to uses, and Dame Agnes Harcourt in Chancery regarding the manors of Stanton Harcourt, Ellenhall, Sharesdoun, Sharehill, Brimsford, Coven, and Bosworth, and lands in Sutton, South Leigh, and elsewhere, late of Robert Harcourt, Knt., who died without issue, brother of the said Lettice, Elizabeth, Katherine and Elyn, and husband of the said Agnes.

  • Agnes Harcourt, identified variously as the widow of Thomas Stonor, and daughter and heir of Sir Robert Harcourt,[2] and as one of the five daughters and coheirs of Sir Robert Harcourt, standard-bearer of Henry VII at Bosworth,[3][4] and mother of William Cope's eldest son and heir, Stephen Cope, esquire, who was Serjeant of the Poultry to Henry VIII, and married Anne Saunders, daughter and coheir of William Saunders of Oxfordshire, 'from whom the family at Bedhampton in Hampshire descended, that extinguished in daughters'.[1][5][6][7]
