About Robert Hawkins

Robert and Marie (Mary) Hawkins emigrated to Charlestown, MA in April, 1635, aboard the ship Elizabeth & Anne, which departed from the Blackpool section of the Port of London, commanded by Capt. Roger Cooper. (Horton, John C. "List of Emigrants to America, 1603-1780.")

Shortly after their arrival in Charlestown, they built a house and windmill on a site which became known as Windmill Hill. Apparently they lived there only a short time, because in 1638 it is recorded that he was fined by the authorities for selling his house to a foreigner without the town's consent. Later that year his holding were recorded as a house and two acres at Southfield; four acres at Linefield; 1 3/4 acres of cow commons; two acres of fresh meadow; 10 acres of woods; and 25 acres at Waterfield. The State Prison in the Charlestown section of Boston is on the site of his former homestead, at the apex of Harvard and Main Sts. Robert Hawkins joined the First Church at Charlestown on April 17, 1636; his wife Marie joined on January 8, 1636. On July 25, 1636, he was made a freeman by the General Court, Charlestown.
