fought with his father at the Battle of Langside 1568; resigned his whole estate to King James VI 1591/2 and obtained a new charter "erecting the same into a free Lordship and Barony, to be called the Lordship and Barony of Kilmarnock", to himself for life with remainder to his son and heir, Robert, Master of Boyd, in tail male, after whom to "heirs male", thereby excluding the heirs general

Robert Master of Boyd, married Jean Ker (descended from Sir Andrew Ker, of Cessford, and from King Robert Bruce (see Robertson) and they had two children: Robert, sixth Lord Boyd (25), and James, Eighth Lord Boyd (27). Robert, Master of Boyd died in May, 1597, before the death of his father, and his widow married, secondly, David, Tenth Earl of Crawford. Robert is given a middle name of "Martin" by Mr. W.P. Boyd.
