About Robert Philipson Cary

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA with the rank of Private. DAR Ancestor #: A020259

Probably born on his father's plantation "Pokerstock" in Chesterfield Va. He was living within 20 miles of Richmond, Va before moving to Claiborne Co. Tenn about 1805, when his last name appears on the Court Minutes of the Co., which indicates the last two sons were born in Tenn. Robert served three years as Private on the Va Cont. Line and was granted Land Bounty Warrent # 994, 21 Jun 1783 for 100 acres in Ky. He left at least 770 acres of land in Claiborne Tenn as the heirs owed taxes on that amount. (Book A and B, pp 99 and 101) Daniel Cary family tradition is that Robert Philipson and his wife were killed by Indians or died of sickness while moving West (Both may be true). Different people took the children and settled in different places, and some lost touch with each other. This seems to be substantiated by the Court Minutes of Claiblrne Co. Tenn from 19 July 1813 to November 1822 which all the children except the three eldest. There is no mention of Robert's wife, Martha, which indicates she died before him. The bodies of William, his mother-in-law and several of his children are in the old burial ground on the farm called "Free Soil Place" near Claiborne Tenn. Shirley Blackburn Munkirs, grandson of Martha "Patsy" (Cary) Munkirs, told that he knew a "Wire" Ware/Wear Cary, his grandmother's brother. This leads to the thought that "Wire" may have been a middle name of one of the sons of Robert Philipson Cary.

Proof: 1) Named in Father's will dated 21 Oct 1784 Chesterfield Co. Va. 2) Court Minutes of Claiborne Co. Tenn., 19 July 1813 to November 1822. 3) Left will giving land to son Nathaniel. 4) Auditor's account of Revolutionary Soliders of Va., XVLL, p. 651. 5) Sons of Rev. Year Book 1913, Ky. State, p. 203. 6) D.A.R. # 456853, Martha Charlyne Elizabeth Huff.
