Roelof Abraham Zeederberg left his native Sweden to seek greener pastures elsewhere. He arrived in Cape Town in 1798, and soon established himself by investing in coffee. This came about when a ship carrying a cargo of coffee was wrecked off the Cape of Good Hope. With the help of two compatriot partners, Roelof bought the wreck, salvaged the cargo of coffee, and washed, dried, and sold it. The Zeederbergs were on their way. Roelof's descendants eventually spread throughout southern Africa, making contributions in field ranging from farming to medicine, commerce, industry and law. Four Zeederberg brothers, Doel, Dolf, Louw and Pieter went into the transport business in the 1880's.

From the Cape Archives – Memorial Co. 3865 No. 504 30/7/1807 (?)

'A letter written to the Governor of the Cape, translated from the original in Dutch and signed by Roeloff Abraham Zeederberg himself, requesting he be granted citizenship in the Cape Colony.'

“To His Excellency Du Pre’, Earl of Caledon, Governor and Commander-in-Chief at the Cape of Good Hope, and its Dependencies.

The Memorial of Roeloff Abraham Zederbergh, born of Stromstadt in Sweden, humbly sheweth that your Memorialist arrived here in the month of May in the year 1795, in his capacity as steward on board of the Dutch Merchant Ship, The Geertruyda, and at his request obtained his honourable discharge from the captain of the said ship.

That your Memorialist afterwards, at the time of the former English Government, having addressed himself to His Excellency, Lieutenant General James Henry Craig, then Commander-in-Chief of this settlement, obtained His Excellency’s permission to remain in the Colony.

That your Memorialist through his zeal and industry so far, he is now the possessor of immovable Property within this town, and does not doubt but the best testimonies will be given to your Excellency, as to his good and peaceful conduct as inhabitant of this Colony and during his stay here.

Your Memorialist therefore begs leave to address himself to Your Excellency and respectfully to request that it may please Your Excellency graciously to admit him a Burgher of the Colony and to grant him an ordinary Burgher’s letter.

And as in duty bound, your Memorialist will ever pray.

Signed – R. A. Zederberg
