Roman Tanbensiang Ongpin was a Chinese-Filipino businessman, philanthropist, nationalist, and civic citizen in the late 19th century. He served as "primer teniente de mestizos" of Binondo from 1883 to 1885; but he strongly sympathized with the ideals of Andres Bonifacio (he furnished the revolutionists with funds, foodstuff, and other supplies). He operated a general hardware store in Binondo, Manila. A street beside Binondo Church was named in his memory and is where his statue was erected. More here: http://bit.ly/A92xif.
