About Rory McKill Neely
6) Rory McKill Neely (~1630) - This man's name seemed so out of place until you found the McKill's living in Portpatrick with the Neillies. The LDS records list this man's birthdate around 1630. This is somewhat confirmed by the Derry Cathedral record of the christening of Francis Neely, son of Rory McKill Neely, on 16 November, 1656 which would have made Rory McKill 26 years old at the birth of his son………just about right. I believe that it is most probable Rory was the son of William (1) and named after his maternal grandfather. Furthermore, it seems logical that his mother was the wife of William (1). This theory fits very neatly into the observances you have made about William possibly coming from that area of Scotland and the fact that McKills were also living in that area. The unusual name for Ulster makes anything else a fairly remote coincidence in my mind. Finally, I think it is likely that William's (1) wife and mother to Rory was named Margaret McKill because of the presumed daughter, Margaret (8) and the tendency to name her children after her family (i.e. Rory McKill). The "romantic" speculation could certainly be that after William (1) came over in 1608 at age 18, he might have gone home in his late 20's and married a local girl, then brought her back to Ulster (maybe he had land by then) and started raising a family in 1621. Who knows, but it sure sounds good and fits within the records we have.
