During the Revolutionary War, Roswell enlisted in a Berkshire regiment, commanded by Colonel John Brown, about 1777. On October 19, 1780, he was wounded in an action in which Colonel Brown was killed at Stoneraby on the Mohawk River. The bone in his arm was shattered by a musket ball and required several surgeries to remove bone fragments and then reset the bone.

Married Phebe Park on October 5, 1784 and purchased a farm in Wells, Vermont.
