Herbert Smith Curtis, Jr., graduated at Kilmichael (Miss.) High School, Class of 1940, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Oct. 2, 1940. He served at the Naval Station at San Diego, Calif., and aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma before being reassigned to the U.S.S. California. He had been promoted to Seaman 2nd Class and earned the American Defense Service Medal, for service during the unlimited emergency proclaimed by the President on May 27, 1941.

On Dec. 7, 1941, he was aboard his ship, the U.S.S. California, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when he was killed by enemy action. He was awarded the Purple Heart (posthumously) for this action and later awarded the World War II Victory Medal (posthumously). His remains had originally been interred in Hawaii, but were re-interred at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Miss., in Oct. 1947.
