About Samuel H. Gardner

Samuel H. Gardner (born June 1787 – April 30, 1864) was an American farmer from Bingham, Michigan.

Samuel H. Gardner was born in New York, in likely the town of Stephentown. His parents are unknown, though he is most likely the grandson of Job Gardiner, who moved from Kingstown, Rhode Island to Rensselaer County, New York in 1752. His mother's maiden name may have been Hooker, the middle name given to his fourth son, and possibly his own.

Gardner married Lena Francisco sometime before 1815 and they had nine children: George Washington Gardner (born c. 1815), John William Gardner (born March 1, 1818), William C. Gardner (born July 15, 1820), Mary J. Gardner (born March 6, 1824), Samuel Hooker Gardner (born c. 1826), Austrus Ann Gardner (born c. 1827), Lewis C. Gardner (born c. 1833), Anna Eliza Gardner (born c. 1835), and Henry Peter Gardner (born June 5, 1839).

Gardner and his family lived in Niagara County, New York until around 1839, when they moved to Bingham, Michigan. He purchased some 63 acres of land, which in 1850 was worth $1,500.

Gardner died on April 30, 1864, at the age of 76, in Clinton County, Michigan.
