Biography:

BORN: ca. 1685 in Charles County; youngest son. NATIVE: at least second generation. RESIDED: at "The Hills," Charles County.

FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John Hanson (?-1714), a planter; possibly an immigrant. MOTHER: Mary, daughter of Thomas Hussey, of Charles County. BROTHERS: Robert Hanson (ca. 1680-1748); Benjamin (?-1719); and John (ca. 1681-1754). SISTERS: Mary, who married first, Rev. William Maconchie (?-1742), and second, Theophilus Swift; Ann (1692-?); and Sarah. NIECES: Dorothy Hanson (1721-1752), who married Richard Harrison (?-1780); Mary Hanson, who married Daniel Jenifer (?-1795). MARRIED by 1707 Elizabeth (ca. 1688-1764), widow of Benjamin Warren (?-1706); daughter of Walter Storey (ca. 1666-1726). Her sisters were Sarah; Charity; and Jane. CHILDREN. SONS: Walter Hanson (1711/12-1794); Samuel Hanson (1716-1794); William (1718/19-1721); John Hanson, Jr. (1721-1783); and William (1726-?). DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth (1707-?), who married Benjamin Douglas; Mary (1709/10-?); Sarah (1714-?); Jane (1721/22-?); Charity (1724-?), who married first, John Howard (?-1749), and second, Arthur Lee (?-1760); and Chloe, who married Philip Briscoe.

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., by 1717. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; officeholder.

PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Charles County, 1716-1717 (Laws 1; resigned between the 2nd and 3rd sessions to become sheriff), 1728-1731 (Laws 1-5). LOCAL OFFICES: sheriff, Charles County 1717-at least 1720; clerk, Charles County, 1720-1740; deputy commissary, Charles County, 1724-1733/34. MILITARY SERVICE: captain, period of service unknown.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 190 acres in Charles County (acquired through his marriage). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: acquired nearly 1,400 acres in Charles County by purchase and patent between 1717 and 1736; sold 300 acres in Charles County in 1722/23, and gave 340 acres in Charles County (including his dwelling house) to his son Walter Hanson (1711/12-1794) in 1738.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on October 26, 1740, in Charles County; buried at "Equality," Charles County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £1,361.0.0 current money (including 22 slaves and books); FB, £1,258.2.11. LAND: ca. 750 acres in Charles County.
