Samuel was the first Hayward to locate in Menden, where Ferdinando Thayer (brother-in-law) had already moved

Samuel owned house lots in Mendon (some in payment for civic services) prior to King Philip's War. He left Mendon during the war and is recorded as having returned immediately following King Philip's death.
