About Samuel Hutchins of Kittery

There is considerable confusion between the lineage of this Samuel Hutchins and Samuel Hutchins of Haverhill, MA. Both men have a claimed birth date of Aug. 20 1682, and both were supposedly married to a Hannah Merrill, and lived within 50 miles of each other. Both men also have some of the same claimed descendants. However, these appear to be two separate men, with separate sets of siblings. The two Samuels should not be merged, pending the sorting out of their proper descendant lines.

This Samuel, Son of Enoch Hutchins, II and Mary B. Hutchins (Stevenson), is NOT the one born 20 Aug 1682, as proven by Massachusetts Births and Christenings.

It seems that this Samuel of Maine is also the correct father of Samuel Hutchins, Jr,, 1716-1790, who appears in the 1790 census, Arundel, York, Maine:

  • Name: Saml Hutchins Jr
  • Event Type: Census
  • Event Date: 1790
  • Event Place: Arundel, York, Maine, United States
  • Page: 278

However, there is a 1739 marriage record of a Samuel Hutchins who married Mary Richardson in 1739 in Essex, Mass. So that Samuel, probably the one born 1716, is NOT the son of this Samuel Sr. of Maine.

Samuel Hutchins was captured by Indians on 9 May 1698 and taken to Canada... returned in January 1720, he was a Field officer in Kittery... sold his dwelling in Kittery and was living in Arundel before 30 June 1729. He moved to Arundel (later named Kennebunkport) about 1739 and died there on December 28, 1742.He is buried in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, ME. Samuel Hutchins, born ca. 1685 in Kittery, Maine; died 1742 in Arundel, Maine; married (1) Sarah March ca. 1706; born ca. 1687; died Unknown; married (2) Hannah Merrill January 4, 1714/15 in Haverhill, Massachusetts; born 1698 in Bradbury, Massachusetts; died June 9, 1745 in Arundel, Maine. Notes for Samuel Hutchins: Samuel was captured by Indians on 9 May 1698 and taken to Canada. He was returned 24 Jan. 1699. (Mass. Archives- Vol.70, p.398). On 6 Feb. 1703 Samuel received 29 pairs of snowshoes, 20 of which were to go to the soldiers at Piscataqua. (Ibid- Vol. 71, p.84) In 1720 he was a field officer in Kittery his house being made into a garrison. (Old Kittery and Her Families- Everett S. Stackpole, p.179) He was from Salisbury in 1724 when he sold his house in Kittery. He had moved to Arundel before 30 June 1729. (Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire- p.366) Samuel was made a proprietor of Arundel in 1731. (History of Kennebunk Port- p.128) Samuel was also a slave owner. (Ibid- p.158]

This Samuel is the same one who is buried at Arundel, York, Maine, as indicated in the memorial below, with the correct parents. However, that memorial has the wrong birth date for this Samuel.
