About Samuel Löb Kanitz

There were two people called Samuel Kanitz, similar dates.

Birth of Samuel Löb Kanitz, son of Jecheska and Mirl, appears in the Index to Nikolsburg Births, in the collection of the Jewish Museum in Prague, online at, Image #20 (with two siblings; another is on Image #19).

Samuel Löb Kanitz married Chaile Pisk in 1823, as seen in Nikolsburg Marriages from the collection of the Jewish Museum in Prague: , image #4.

From genealogist Georg Gaugusch, May 31, 2013: "Samuel Löb Kanitz was married to Katharina PISK per the marriage records of his sons Mayer in Vienna 472/1856 Stadttempel, Josef 44/1858 Stadttempel, Ezechiel 396/1864 Stadttempel." None of those records is viewable online, as images for that district start with 1874. The marriage of another, older, son of Samuel Löb/Leb appears in Czech Jewish Registers, Mikulov, for 1866: Lazar, age 30, "son of Samuel Leb & Chaile Kanitz", b. 1836, marries Juli dau. of Josef Violin, age 24, on Dec. 29, 1866 (Mikulov Marriages 1849-1879, image #52 of 71, line #442). The couple appears in Vienna later [births], with Lazar becoming Louis in the late 1860s.

Note a Moses Kanitz appears on the 1754 Judenhäuser list in Hugo Gold's Moravia / Nikolsburg, at (p. 433-34; Moses is in Haus #20 along with Isak Koritschoner and others). Other Koritschoners, and a Mathes Kanitz, appear in Haus #21 on the same list.

G. Gaugusch's Wer Einmal War states that a Samuel Kanitz had "three sons -- Simon, Ignaz and Sigmund Kanitz -- who settled in Vienna in the 19th century" (WEW, pp. 1322-1325). This refers to a different Samuel Kanitz, 1789-1866, who was "privatagent aus Nikolsburg in Mähren," and died in Vienna.

Samuel Löb Kanitz 1798-1870 died in Nikolsburg on Feb. 17, 1870 in Haus #84, 72 years old [b. 1797/98]; listed as "Samuel Löb gattin v. Chaile Kanitz." Image is at, Czech Registers, Nikolsburg (Mikulov) Deaths [Z] 1850-1873, #111 of 126 ("page 109" of the volume). The information also now appears in the Index to Mikulov Deaths [], Image #21, in the Jewish Museum of Prague's collection entitled Židovská náboženská obec Mikulov, Rejstřík (z roku 1913) k matrikám, NOZ 1762 - 1912, II. část: zemřelí, Z 1762 - 1912 (1914), písmena J - Q. Name of spouse (far right) is "Chaile."

In the Nikolsburg Jewish Cemetery Database at, the grave is listed as "VI_27_8 KANITZ Schmuel Löb."
