About Samuel Rotch

[From an email by Jack Roach (]

Solomon Barefield was the oldest son of Doctor Wilson Roach and Arquilla (or Aquila) Barefield (who were married in Hancock Co., GA). The "Doctor" was apparently his given name, not a title. You will find him listed in various places as Doctor W., D.W., and Wilson Roach. An older brother of his -- Jonathan Roach -- was my gg grandfather and their parents were Samuel and Mary (Betts) Roach.

The family moved from Hancock to Early Co., GA around 1830. There Samuel Roach, Jr. (D.W.'s brother) killed a man in a knife fight. Jonathan and D.W. posted bail for him ($5000, I think) and then he jumped bail, changed his name to Rotch and moved to Chambers Co., AL.

I have been able to trace the family back to a John Roach who came to VA about 1643 and settled in MD about 1660.
