About Samuel Tompkins

Samuel Tompkins

One of the original settlers of Bridgewater, MA. Captain Myles Standish, John Alden and others were responsible for equally dividing the land to the settlers (Bridgewater is west of Plymouth). Original group consisted of about sixty.

Mitchell says his will dated 1653 gives all his lands to Francis Cary, who was brought up by and lived with Samuel and Lettice. In 1840 Francis Cary was still living on the same lands inherited by his great-great grandfather. Will also mentions

his brother, John Tomkins, cousins Mary Foster and Elizabeth White, and Hannah Dogget.

Research: Robert A. Tompkins, on p. 9 of his 1942 genealogy, indicates Samuel lived first at Duxbury, MA, then Milford, CT, then Bridgewater, MA.

NEW ENGLAND HISTORICAL & GENEALOGICAL RECORD, Vol. 87 (1933), pp 238-245.

Savage, James, Genealogical Dictionary, p. 311, lists him as grantee of Bridgewater, MA; also says his wife's brother probably Edward Foster of Scituate, MA, another one of the grantees of Bridgewater.

He is listed on p. 441 (Samuell Tompkins), Duxborrow, 1643, in the list of Names of all the Males that are able to beare Armes; this in PLYMOUTH COLONY, ITS HISTORY & PEOPLE, 1620-1691, by Eugene Aubrey Stratton.
