About Sarah Sophia HESTER

Informant of death was son Nathan. Cause of death was softening of brain & exhaustion. Extract from the "Inquirer" newspaper dated 5/1/1848: 'At York on the 30th December 1847 from 'Grass Dale', the residence of Thomas Brown esq., Sarah Sophia, only daughter of Thomas Hester esq., of the Canning River, to Nathan Knight esq., of the former place. They took up land at York, sheep & wheat country. 16 at 1837 Census. According to Anne Harse after Sarah's husband died in 1859 in York, she went back to Red Cliff farm with her four sons and lived with her father. In 1861 Thomas (her father) made 1,071 acres of the property over to her & retained the use of the land for the rest of his life. He also paid off money he owed to the Auditor General. Sarah remained there after her father died with two of her sons William & George. George moved to Wangong to take up better land and she moved with him. In 1875 she sold the property to George Randall for 200.00 pounds. She was the last of the original settlers to leave the Canning. Her mother Sophia was the first white woman to live there.
