Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army in Company D, 20th Michigan Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania, Virginia. His citation reads "Seized the colors, the color bearer having been shot down, and gallantly fought his way out with them, though the enemy were on the left flank and rear."
