Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War first as a Sergeant, then as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 37th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia on May 5, 1862. His citation reads "Took command of the company in action, the captain having been wounded, the other commissioned officers being absent, and handled it with skill and bravery". His Medal was issued on October 11, 1892. Originally interred in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in East Orange, New Jersey, his descendents had his remains moved to Arlington National Cemetery in July 2001.
