About Shmaya David Florenthal
He was the 3rd child in his family, his mother had been sick with Tuberculosis most of his life, and passed away when he was only 13 years old. He was a very handsome young man and a member of the youth movement Hashomer in Transilvanya. Immigrated to Palestine in 1933, one day after his marriage to Bella Reichman Florenthal, whom he met and fallen in love with during the one year of training-Hachshara, before Aliya, (immigration) to Palestine.. Started his life in a Kibbutz of Hanoar Hziyoni at Kfar Saba, but left it to live with his wife in Kfar Saba. At the beginning they earned their living working at the Orange Groves. The daughter Esther was born in 1934. They built their little house and lived there until the year of 1942. At the beginning of 2nd world war, he volunteered to serve in the British Mandate Settlements Police, which was a part of his duty as a member of the Haganah organization. In the year of 1942 he and his cousin Bello Fried, bought a Taxi together. They both drove the Taxi in shifts earning thier living out of it. He and Bella, moved to Haifa in 1943, Esther could not live with them, because they could not find a suitable appartment to live in Haift at that time, so they had to arrange for her to live in Geva, a Kibbutz where she lived like in a boarding school, until the year of 1946. The son Benjamin, Benny, was born in 1946. Shmaya fought in the war of Independence from 1947 until 1948, serving as a Sargent Major, in the IDF, he participated in the battles to free the main road to Haifa from arab attacks on the Jewinsh transportation, conquering the villages along the area called Hof Hacarmel, and took part guarding strategic areas in the Galilee after it was freed from arab forces. After his release, he started to work as a Tourist Guide, and his Guide Certificate is one of the earliest in Israel. He was a very good guide, and many of the people who enjoyed the tours with him, became his admirers and friends. The last few years of his life he was the Director and operator of Carmel Touring, under the ambrella of Taxi Carmel, of which he had been a member since 1942. He Died of Cancer of the Pancreas at the age of 51. He had a good Voice, and loved to sing displaying the colors of his Tenor. He enjoyed his first grandchild Ofer to the atmost, as if he felt that he will not be able to enjoy the younger ones. He dies just 1 month and 10 days before his 2nd grandson was born. His last wish before he died was that the baby will be named after him, Shmaya. He was a man of integrity, honest and capable, and the best father and grandfather, a warm uncle and family man and was appriciated and loved by all.
