My Dear Will

...Mother [Betsey Ann Andrew, 1815-1886] used to tell about an ancestor who was one of the famous Green Mountain boys who fought in the battle of Lexington [in another letter refered to, probablly more correctly, as the battle of Bennington, VT] under Gen. Stark, I think. I can not say whether he was of the house of Andrew or that of Fuller. Mother's Grandfather Fuller [Shubael Fuller III] came from Massachusetts. He followed rafting on the St. Lawrence river. He was in high favor with the Indians of that region and they expressed their regard for him by fitting a ring in his nose. He was probably married in Vermont. He died at our house at over eighty years of age about the year [18] 46. [Note: in other letters the year referred to was 1843 and 1844.]

Mother's parents removed from Bennington when she was three years old (1818). Grandfather Rufus Andrew was a Deacon of the Baptist Church, leader of the choir and played the fife.

His mother moved to Michigan and was then over 96 years of age. Grandmother Abigail [Andrew (Fuller)] also taught the neighborhood school. She also plied the loom...

Very sincerely yours Uncle Geo. Vail

...Mothers parents were Rufus and Abigail Andrew (not Andrews) maiden name Fuller. They removed from Bennington Vermont in 1818 to North Boston south of Buffalo N.Y. Mother was three years old, an only child. An uncle of Mother's Thomas Bailey was of the party I do not know how the relationship comes in....Abigail was Methodist.

Yours Geo.

My dear Will -

...Her grandfather Fuller died at our house at 80 years of age about 1844 [he would have been 80 in 1846] and her mother about the same time. ...Rufus Andrew died in 1858. His records and effects were destroyed in a fire in which his second wife lost her life in 1868.

Yours Uncle George

Extract of a letter from William L. Nuessle Bismark, ND, to his son William? Transcribed by James Earl Lambertus, 1/15/2012:

Dec. 12, 1957

...I might say that my grandfather's name was Willhelm Vail or Veil. Some places it is is spelled one way and other places another, as you will see in Uncle George's letters. His name was always spelled Vail. … Now as to your grandfather, my father, his name was Christopher Nuessle. For a period it was spelled “Nesley” but he reverted to the original German spelling of Nuessle [Nüssle]. My father was born in the kingdom of Wurtemberg Germany in 1828. Father and two of his brothers came to America about 1850 to get away from inscription and for better opportunities. My father learned a trade and was either a tanner or a brewer. …

Yours, Dad
