About Simeon Avery, Deacon

  1. Note: 1st Congregational Church of Groton records; Simeon Avery served in Capt. Joseph Morgan's company that marched to the relief of Fort William Henry in August 1757 (French and Indian War Rolls, Vol. 1, page 197). He moved to Orford, N.H., where he was a deacon of the Congregational church and an innkeeper for many years. He kept the first ferry across the Connecticut River there. According to the record in Sweet's 'The Averys of Groton,' he married for the second time on Sept. 11, 1783, Mrs. Hannah (Smallee) Loomis. She was probably Mrs. Hannah (Loomis) Smallee, daughter of Benoni and Hannah (Woodward) Loomis. She was born March 27, 1745, at Lebanon, CT (Loomis Genealogy, p. 58). They had one child, Simeon Hyde, born Jan. 13, 1787.' The Groton Avery Clan cites Simeon's marriage to Sarah Niles. Church: Baptized 26 July 1730. Another record says 25 July.
