About Simeon Metra Luz

Simeon was gobernadorcillo of Batangas (1854, 1866) and is remembered as the second duly elected governor of the province of Batangas (1903-1904). It was during his term as governor when Filipino-American relations were greatly improved through education.

History also reveals that Simeon was a good friend of Jose Rizal. In fact, Rizal's poem Himno al Trabajo was written when Rizal failed to accept the invitation of Simeon for him (Rizal) to join the festivities elevating Lipa to a city in January 1888. The poem celebrates the industry and zeal of the people of Lipa.

Simeon was also a teacher, having taught the young Claro M. Recto the Spanish language. He is fondly remembered as Kapitan Simeon on account of his great influence to a whole generation of Lipenos.
