About Simon de Abendaño

Simón de Abendaño

Simón was born in Ciudád de Rodrígo on the border of Portugal and Spain and emigrated to the New World and then to New México during the 1600s or 1610s. The name Abendaño has a history of association with Jewish families in Spain.

Among Sephardic Jews with the name Abendaño, there are records of Mayr Abendanno as selling sheep and goats to the city's slaugter house in Murcia in 1469. Also in 1469. Mose Abendanno was apprehended along with many other armed Jews attempting to enter the Moorish quarter of the city in search of one of Mose's servants.

Herónimo Abendaño and his wife Beatríz Riquelme are listed on the 1660 census of Lorco Spain. They lived next door to Juan de Osca Alzamora and Juliana Real de Aguilar who were parents of a New Méxican ancestor, Alonso Rael de Aguilar.
