About Sir Frederick Black

Sir Frederick Black was born about 1869. He is best remembered for his role as Director General of Munitions Supply during the First World War (1914-18). The Ministry Of Munitions was established by former Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George, in 1915 following catastrophic losses due to faulty and inadequate shells being produced from outdated production methods. His daughter Dora Black - Lady Russell, (3.04.1894 - 13.05.1986), was the second wife of Bertrand Russell. She was an author, feminist and socialist campaigner. (bio by nick emm)
