Margaret Bruce was the daughter of Sir George Bruce of Carnock, a direct lineal descendant of King Robert Bruce the first of Scotland. Ref. Sir George Bruce married Margaret Primrose, daughter of Archibald Primrose.

He was the son of Sir Edward Bruce of Blairhall and Alison Reid.

He bought Carnock from Sir A. Lindsay.
