Biographical Summary

The Rt. Hon. James Stirling, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, 1st b. of Alexander Stirling, of the same city, Merchant, by Jean {d. 30 July 1810, aged 94), da. of James Moir, of Sockfield, co. Perth, was b. about 1740 ; was partner in the Edinburgh banking house of "Mansfield, Ramsay, and Co.," becoming (1790-91) Lord Provost of Edinburgh, and, "having made some spirited exertions in favour of [the] Government at a very critical period," was cr. a Baronet, as above, 19 July 1792. He was twice again (1794-95 and 1798-99) Lord Provost, and was of Mansiield, in co. Ayr. He m. Alison, yst. da. of one of his partners, James Mansfield, of Edinburgh, Banker. He d. 17 Feb. 1805 in Queen square, Edinburgh, aged 65, and was bur. at Greyfriars, Edinburgh. M.I. Will pr. 1803. His widow d. 20 July 1823, aged 73, and was bur. with him. M.I.
