About John Brydges, 1st Baron Chandos

John Brydges, 1st Baron Chandos was an English Member of Parliament and later peer. His name is also sometimes spelled Bruges. He was a prominent figure at the English Court during the reigns of King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, and Queen Mary. Brydges was the High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1537 and took part in surpressing the rebellion of Sir Thomas Wyatt in 1554. As Lieutenant of the Tower of London during the early part of Queen Mary's reign, he had custody of Lady Jane Grey, whom he escorted to the scaffold, as well as Sir Thomas Wyatt and Queen Mary's half-sister, Lady Elizabeth. He was made Baron Chandos of Sudlely on April 8th, 1554.
