"Sir John Don-Wauchope, Baronet [S. 1667], of Edmonstone, co. Midlothian, formerly John Wauchope, cousin and h. male, being only s. and h. of John Wauchope, of Edmondstone aforesaid, Lieut.-Col. of the Edinburgh Militia, by Henrietta Warrender Cecilia, da. of Sir James Gardiner Baird, 4th Baronet [S. 1696], which John, who d. June 1837, aged about 70, was 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. of John Wauchope, of Edmondstone (who d. 1810, aged 68), the s. and h. of James Wauchope, formerly James Don, of the same, Advocate 1716, the only son that had issue of Patrick Don, of Altouneburn, by Anne, da. of (whose issue became heir of line to) John Wauchope, of Edmondstone aforesaid, a Lord of Session [S.] under the style of Lord Edmondstone), the said Patrick being 3d s. of Sir Alexander Don, the 1st Baronet [S. 1667]. He was 6. 10 July 1816, at Edmondstone; suc. his father in that estate, June 1837; ed. at Trin. Coll., Cambridge; B.A., 1837; M.A. 1842 ; Capt. Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry, 1837-52 ; suc. to the Baronetcy, 19 March 1862, when he took the name of Don before that of Wauchope ; Chairman of Board of Lunacy [S.], 1863, and of Board of Education [S.], 1872. He m. 26 April 1853, Bethia Hamilton, 1st da. of Andrew Buchanan, of Greenfield, co. Lanark, by Bethia Hamilton, da. of William Ramsay, of Gogar. He d. 12 Dec. 1893, in his 78th year, at 12 Ainslie place, Edinburgh. Personalty, £73,811. His widow living 1904."

-------------------- He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Midlothian. He succeeded to the title of 8th Baronet Don, of Newton Don [N.S., 1667] on 19 March 1862. He was Chairman of the General Board of the Commissionerss in Lunacy, Scotland in 1863.1 He was Chairman of the Board of Education, Scotland in 1872.
