Biographical Summary

"Sir John Dalrymple, afterwards Dalrymple-Hamilton-Macgill, Baronet [S. 1698], of Cousland and Cranstoun, as also of Fala and Oxenfoord, co. Edinburgh, 1st s. and h. by 1st wife, b. 1726; admitted as Advocate, 17 Dec. 1748 ; Solicitor to the Board of Excise ; suc. to the Baronetcy, March 1771 ; was a Baron of the Court of Exchequer, 1776-1807. " In consequence of his accession to several estates by marriage, towards the latter part of his life," he took the names of Hamilton-Macgill after that of Dalrymple. He m. 7 Oct. 1760, his cousin, Elizabeth, da. and h. of Thomas Hamilton, afterwards Hamilton-Macgill, of Fala and Oxenfoord, by Elizabeth, da. of Sir John Dalrymple, 2d Baronet [S. 1698]. He d. 26 Feb. 1810, aged 84, at Oxenfoord Castle. His wife survived him."
