About John Murray

Biographical Summary

"(335) Sir John Murray of Blackbarony. Member of Assize, Raid of Ruthven, 9th February 1584 (Criminal Trials), and was M.P. for Peeblesshire 1608-09. He married, first, Margaret, daughter of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick. Her Will recorded 3rd July 1609 (Edinburgh). They had issue:-

  • Andrew Murray, died unmarried v.p.

ARMS on Seal, 1617. - A fetterlock; on a chief three stars (Laing's Seals).

  • Archibald (No. 336 below).
  • Sir John Murray of Ravelrig.
  • Colonel Walter Murray of Pilmore. From him apparently descended : -
    • Colonel John Murray of Pilmuir. Will recorded 23rd August 1745 (Edinburgh). His widow was Helen Murray, whose Will was recorded 20th December 1760 Edinburgh). The Will of their son, Lieutenant Patrick Murray of Pilmure, was recorded 12th January 1745 (Edinburgh).
  • Alexander Murray, had a son: -
    • John Murray, apprenticed to a merchant 5th June 1650 (Apprentice Roll).
  • Patrick Murray.
  • William Murray.

He married, second, Margaret Wauchope of Keckmure, and had two daughters.
