Robert Garrett
The Garrett ancestors in England were militarily inclined, fighting for the current king as well as for themselves. They developed vast land holding via marriage and royal gifts. When the feudal system was weakened, they became important merchants, businessmen, administrators. Until shortly before they immigrated to North America they were strong Catholics. The most likely reason for their leaving England was religion – it appears that they became Protestants and some of them Quakers. Some of their cousins were sent to the Tower, tortured and beheaded.
