About Sivilian Babson

The 1850 census for Brooksville shows us that beside Sivilian and Abbie, and their first daughter, Emma, their household consisted of a boarder, Julia Allen, age 30, who subsequently married Sivilian's brother James Madison Babson. Also in the household were John Babson Perkins, 24, clothier, and Almira J. Perkins, 17, children of Eliza (Babson) Perkins, Sivilian's eldest sister.1124

Sivilian was shown as a mariner on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, but by the 1870 census he is called a retail merchant. It also says he had real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property valued at $5,000. That year they also have a teacher, Flavilla Billings, age 27, in their household.

Sivilian purchased considerable real estate between 1833 and 1878 and he sold land between 1838 and 1870 to various people or family members. Some samples are when Sivilian Babson of Brooksville, Master Mariner, leased to Judson C. Standley of Brooklin, mariner, 2.5 acres more or less in Brooklin for twelve years from the fourth day of May 1832.1125

On 14 Oct 1850 Sivilian purchased a sixteenth interest in the "land and mill privilege & Mill & machinery Implements and furniture" of the Brooksville Manufacturing Company from Joseph Walker.1126

Another deed tells us that on 12 January 1858 with his wife, Abby P. Babson relinquishing her dower rights:

Sivilian Babson of Brooksville, Master Mariner, sells for $65 to Groves F. Allen of Brooklin, mariner land in Brooklin on the north side of lot #7 of the 3rd division being the northern part of a parcel of land formerly conveyed by William Herrick to Amos Herrick and containing ten acres.1127

Sivilian and Abbie, along with their daughter Emma, are buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, Brooksville, on a high hill overlooking Walker Pond, only a few hundred feet from their lovely old house at Lakeview Cemetery, Brooksville.

Sivilian and his brothers were remembered in Nancy (Tapley) Babson's 1883 poem Lines written in memory of the Babsons.

Abbie P. Perkins was born on 2 Mar 1823 at Harrington, ME.1128 She died on 25 Jul 1904 at Penobscot, ME, at age 81 of senility.1129 She was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Brooksville. Abbie was a member of an early Maine family. Her father, Thomas Perkins, was born at York, Maine on 4 March 1793 and he died 20 September 1862. Thomas married about 1807 Clarissa Nash of Addison, who was born 28 April 1792 and died 4 January 1873.

Abbie's elder brother, Daniel Merrill Perkins, a member of the Maine State Legislature, had a daughter, Eliza Ann, who married John Babson Allen, a nephew of Sivilian, and a son, Horace, whose daughter Lillian married George J. Babson.1130
