About Sol Price

Find a Grave

Entrepreneur. He changed retail shopping by pioneering the first nationwide members-only discount warehouse stores. As a business lawyer in 1954, he founded the retail chain Fed-Mart in California, selling it to German investors in 1975. In 1976, with co-investors he started the first Price Club, which offered a varied selection of consumer goods and household appliances at extremely low prices. Price Club merged with Costco in 1993 and together the chain comprised 94 stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with annual revenue of more than $6 billion. In 2007, Investor's Business Daily reported that Price's membership wholesale clubs were a $70 billion industry with more than 40 million members. Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton acknowledged Price as a major influence in his career. He died of natural causes. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
