About Solomon Ray

Solomon Ray served in the War of 1812 from Greenville County SC. Solomon and Elizabeth Lock Ray were living in Greenville County South Carolina in 1820 census. They later moved to Fayette County Alabama, then to Itawamba County Mississippi, and later to Caldwell Parish Louisiana. His wife, Elizabeth Lock Ray, applied for a widow's War of 1812 pension while living in Claiborne Parish Louisiana. Solomon had two documented brothers as per the widow's pension application: JOHN RAY who married Mary "Polly" Taylor and who died in Wise County Texas and GREEN BERRY RAY married to Catherine Collins who died in Johnson County Texas.

THE 1830 US CENSUS FOR GREENVILLE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA lists a SOLOMON RAY as head of a household with: one white male under 5, no slaves

one white male 5 to <10,

one white male 30 to <40 (Solomon?)

one white female 5 to <10

one white female 20 to <30 (Solomon's wife?-Elizabeth?)

These ages would be consistent with the Solomon Ray listed in the 1840 US Census for Itawamba Co., MS and the 1850 Itawamba census showing his age as 58 with a birthplace of South Carolina

The younger people in his household are assumed to be some of his children although it is difficult to establish a correspondence to the 1830 family. Some may have died or moved to their own homes and the younger ones came along after the 1830 Census. Review of the ages suggest Solomon moved to Alabama 1833 to 1835, and on to Mississippi abt 1839 or 1840. In the 1860 US Census for Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, Solomon(69) and Elizabeth Ray(60) are recorded with SC and VA birthplaces respectively.
