About St. Leger Landon Carter, of Cleve

The 1850 census shows him as a farmer, with an estate valued at $35,000. There were no other people in his household. Cleve plantation was sold after his death in 1851. He left his estate to the children of his brother Robert C. Carter. He made provisions in his will for the children of his slave Jenny Terry. It is believed those children were his own children. Census records prove them to be mulatto. Jenny Terry's family settled in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Her younger children were not included in the inheritance and census records show them as black beside their mulatto siblings.
