About Stephen Burroughs

Stephen Burroughs was raised by a strict father, who was a minister in Hanover, New Hampshire. His father would whip him for misbehaving on a regular basis.

Stephen was know as a "trickster." He was known for playing pranks. He committed thefts and became a counterfeiter, working from Canada down through the United States. His fake notes brought down several banks.

Stephen posed as a minister to aid in his deception.

Sarah Orne Jewett, author, confused Stephen with Rev. George Burroughs of the Salem witch trials. She wrote about George, calling him Stephen, thus perpetuating the confusion between the two men.
