About Stephen Pilcher

Following the death of Ann, Stephen decided to emigrate to New Zealand. Stephen departed England from the port at Gravesend on the 13th December 1839 arriving in New Zealand in August 1840 on the 'Coromandel'. Stephen's children, Susan aged 17, Stephen aged 11 and John aged 8, were also passengers. Another passenger listed on the 'Coromandel's' passenger list was Bennett Hook and her children, Rachael aged 12, Emily aged 8 and Friend aged 5. Stephen married Bennett Hook in New Zealand in 1842. Stephen and Bennetts relationship bloomed on the voyage out to New Zealand and daughter Sarah Annis was born on the 15th October 1840 (born prior to their marriage & conceived on the voyage) and died on the 20th October 1854. Stephen and Bennett had six more children following their marriage in 1842. In 1851 Stephen Pilcher gave some of his land away to enable the first Methodist Church to be built upon it. The Methodist Church was built in 1854. This site was later used to build Alex Cowan's factory upon. (Information from article on the net by Arthur H Carmon).
