Stipe used the name COSTAN when he went to Perth - unsure if it was changed legally by deed poll, but certainly his two children there were raised as Costan.

The Daily News Perth 20th May 1943 GAS 'KILLS TAXIMAN Overcome by fumes from the gas-producer of . his motor car, Subiaco taxi driver Stephen Kostanich, also known as Stephen Cos tan, died at his home in Subiaco early today. He was found slumped over the steering wheel of the car. The garage door, the left hand door of the car and its right window were open. The 'blower' of the gas-producer — a device used in starting up the gas producer — was still running when the unconscious driver was found in his car about 9.30 a.m. Kostanich had gone to the garage at his home at 7 a.m. to start up the car for the' day's work. He was apparently gassed with carbon monoxide. Well-known in Subiaco for many years, Kostanich' was a big man, weighed 17 stone. He was married.
The Daily News Perth 11th June 1943 Killed By Producer Gas Forty-flve-year-pld taxi-driver Stephen Kostanich was found gassed in his garage at 190 Subiaco. Road, Subiaco, about 9 a.m. on May 20 by taxi-driver Leslie Harrington, of 208 Heytesbury Road, Subiaco. , Harrington switched off the gas producer blower which was still running. The garage doors were open, and Kostanich was lying half-way out of his car. These facts were stated today at an inquest into Kostanich's death. The carbon monoxide gas which caused the man's death was heavy, had no smell, no taste and was invisible, said two doctors. The smell noticed from gas producers was probably sulphur, and not the gas, it was said. Acting-Coroner W. Schofield, J.P., found that Kostanich died through being asphyxiated by exhaust gases from the blower of the gas-producer of his car.
