About Swithin Chandler, I

Swithin Chandler, born Sept. 6, 1674, was the 3rd of 8 children of George and Jane Chandler, all born and baptized in the Church of England parish of Pewsey, County of Wiltshire, England.

When Swithin was 13, his family emigrated to Pennsylvania. His father died of smallpox on the voyage to America and was buried at sea. The Chandlers, like many other new arrivals, spent their first winter in a cave hollowed out of the steep banks of the Delaware River. In August of the following summer, 1688, Swithin's mother married William Hawkes.

In 1704 Swithin married a girl named Ann. Her maiden name is unknown. They settled on the west side of Brandywine Creek, in Christiana Hundred, Delaware. Swithin was very close to his younger brother Thomas. At one time they owned a mill together on Beaver Creek, which came into the opposite side of Brandywine Creek.

In 1710 Swithin was constable for Birmingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was a member of the Provincial Legislature of Pennsylvania for 20 years. He had no children, but was an uncle to Swithin and Ann's 12 children. Swithin died about 1742. His brother Thomas died in 1761.
