About Thomas Barnes of Hingham

  • Thomas Barnes was a freeman in 1645; petitioned to settle at Whitehead Neck; served as constable.


   1.   THOMAS (said to have been a s. of Roland), was an early resident of Hing. and the ancestor of all the families who have borne the surname in this town.   He had a grant of land in 1637, on Bachelor, now Main St. containing three acres, which was bounded N. by Thomas Hett, and S. by Ralph Smith.   This lot is the one upon which stands the dwelling erected by Rev. Joseph Richardson, in 1816, and now belonging to heirs of the late Martin Hayes.   Thomas was by occupation "farmer," and "weaver."   The chris. name of his w. was Anna.   She outlived him, and d. 5 Apr. 1691.   He d. nearly twenty yrs. previously, and a gravestone erected to his memory, and now standing in the Hing. Cemetery, bears the foll. inscription: —


His will, dated 29 Apr. 1671, gives the names of w. and ch.   The inv. of his est. includes 12 horned cattle, 9 swine, produce, weaving material, etc.    Ch., all bt. in Hing., were —

  •    i.   THOMAS, May 21, 1643.   Was living when his fa's will was made, but prob. removed from Hing.
  • 2. ii.   JOHN, May 21, 1643.

  • from Hingham, Old England. Thomas received a house lot in Hingham in 1637 (on Bachelor, now Main St. containing three acres, which was bounded N. by Thomas Hett, and S. by Ralph Smith), as well as a planting lot of five acres on the "Playne neck." In 1638, received a great lot of ten acres on the "Great Playne" first Furlong; in 1646, purchased Stephen Payne's planting lot at Old Planters Hill and bought a piece of land of Joseph Andrew on the same hill; 1647, received 2 acres of salt marsh in Conyhassett, the 23rd lot in the first division; in the third division, drew lot 19, the sixth lot over the river.
