  • Thomas Barnes was a freeman in 1645; petitioned to settle at Whitehead Neck; served as constable.

BARNES (BARNS).

   1.   THOMAS (said to have been a s. of Roland), was an early resident of Hing. and the ancestor of all the families who have borne the surname in this town.   He had a grant of land in 1637, on Bachelor, now Main St. containing three acres, which was bounded N. by Thomas Hett, and S. by Ralph Smith.   This lot is the one upon which stands the dwelling erected by Rev. Joseph Richardson, in 1816, and now belonging to heirs of the late Martin Hayes.   Thomas was by occupation "farmer," and "weaver."   The chris. name of his w. was Anna.   She outlived him, and d. 5 Apr. 1691.   He d. nearly twenty yrs. previously, and a gravestone erected to his memory, and now standing in the Hing. Cemetery, bears the foll. inscription: —

THOMAS BARNS AGED 70 YEARS DYED YE 29 DAY OF NOUEMBER. 1672.

His will, dated 29 Apr. 1671, gives the names of w. and ch.   The inv. of his est. includes 12 horned cattle, 9 swine, produce, weaving material, etc.    Ch., all bt. in Hing., were —

  •    i.   THOMAS, May 21, 1643.   Was living when his fa's will was made, but prob. removed from Hing.
  • 2. ii.   JOHN, May 21, 1643.

 *  iii.   ELIZABETH, Dec. 8, 1644.   m. —— Murfea, or Murfett.

  • from Hingham, Old England. Thomas received a house lot in Hingham in 1637 (on Bachelor, now Main St. containing three acres, which was bounded N. by Thomas Hett, and S. by Ralph Smith), as well as a planting lot of five acres on the "Playne neck." In 1638, received a great lot of ten acres on the "Great Playne" first Furlong; in 1646, purchased Stephen Payne's planting lot at Old Planters Hill and bought a piece of land of Joseph Andrew on the same hill; 1647, received 2 acres of salt marsh in Conyhassett, the 23rd lot in the first division; in the third division, drew lot 19, the sixth lot over the river. (Hingham land records, NEHGS SG I Series A, S-S62 [d]).

In the name of god amen I Thomas Barnes of Hingham in the Countye of Suffolke in New England weaver...Impr.

I doe give and bequeath unto my wife Anna Barnes my whole estate both of houses and lands goods and chattles for her comfortable maintenance dureing the time of her widdowhood beareing the name of Anna Barnes: but in case she shall see cause to change her condition and bee married unto another man then she shall have the best bed and all the furniture there unto belonging: and two milch Cows which she pleases but noething else of the estate; liberty to dispose of sume of the moveable goods what she can conveniently spare unto those of my Children wher she see cause to give them. Item I doe give and bequeath unto my sonn Peeter Barnes after the decease of my wife or when she is married unto another man the houses & home lott with the orchard and fenceing there unto be longing and also the six acres of planting land lyeing upon the old planters hill:and my two acres of salt marsh lyeing in Cory hassett meadows: and my acre of land lyeing upon --- hill: and alsoe the one halfe of my devission of lands that is now devided and appoynted to be devided and alsoe the one halfe of my privilidges of the Commons: Item I doe give unto my sonn James Barnes my planting Lott lyeing in the playne next and a --- of planting land lyeing upon the old planters hill which was formerly the land of Joseph Andrews: and alsoe my great Lott lyeing in the great playne and my acre of salt marsh lyeing at Conyhassett over the river and alsoe the one halfe of my devission of land that is now devided and appoynted to be devided and also the one halfe of my privilidges of the Common after the deceaseof my wife or untill she be married unto another man: unless my wife see cause to give him possession of them sooner. Item I doe give and bequeath unto my sonn Thomas Barnes all my wearing apparrell both of wollen and linnig and alsoe five pounds in Currant pay of this Countrye which my sonn Peeter shall pay unto him or his heirs within one yeare after he posess that which I have give him in my will. Item I doe give unto my sonn John Barnes fortye shillings in currant pay within one yeare after my decease: Item I doe give unto my daughter Elizabeth Murfett (Mulford) twenty shillings in Currant pay: within one year after my decease. Item I doe give unto my daughter Anna Breame forty shillings in currant pay within two yeares after my decease: and I doe Constitute appoynt and ordaine my wife Anna Barnes sole executrix of this my will to see it pformed and fulfilled in wittnes hereof I have heare unto sett my hand and seale the day and yeare above written - Thomas Barnes witness - Mathew Hawke. A true inventory of the estate of Thomas Barnes of Hingham in New England weaver who deceased on the twenty ninth day of november one thousand six hundred seaventy and two 1672. Totall Sum errors excepted: £276.13.8. The above written Inventory made & the estate aprised on the thirteenth day of December 1672 by us: Daniell Cushing, Edm[ond] Pitts.
