# Birth: BEF 3 JUN 1622 in Alton, Hampshire, England (possibly, see notes) 1
Little is known about Thomas Braman who was born about 1620 -1630 other than that he lived in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts with his wife in 1653.
The first record of a Braman in America is of a Thomas Braman (whose date of arrival is unknown) but who first appears on Plymouth Colony Records in 1653. Nothing is known for certain of his origin. One family genealogy checked states that he was born at Ledsham Parish, Yorkshire, 12 July 1614 (Braman Family, Gustav Anjou, R.I. Hist. Soc.) this is refuted in another account of Thomas Braman in America. (Comstock-Thomas Ancestry, H. Minot Pitman,1965). Mr. Pitman in this book states that the family in Yorkshire was Bramhamand could not be twisted to become Braman. Another family history has the nameoriginally being de Bramon, of French origin. Others have made trips to England in attempts to solve the origin, but apparently with no success.
So, beginning with Thomas Braman who came to Taunton, Mass. probably around 1650, with his sons James Joseph and Thomas, the first record of him (Plymounth Col. Court Orders 3:37) was on 9 June 1653:
"Whereas complaint is made of Thomas Brayman of Taunton, that by reason of a distracted condicon, in which he is, that both himselfe and wife are out of any employment which may conduce to theire maintenance and subsistence, the Court have ordered, that such of the towne of Tauntonwhoe are depicted by the said towne to order the especiall affairs thereof shall dispose of the said Brayman as they shall thinke meet for one in such condicon, and that his wife bee putt forth to serve being young and fitt for the same, and having noe other way soe likely to procure her mayntanance."
He must have recovered from this "distracted condicon" because in 1657 he was allowed to take the oath of allegiance (freeman) at Taunton. Nothing more appears on the record of Thomas Braman after that date and he probably died a few years later. His widow, Jane Braman, married Samuel Holloway on 26 Mar 1666. The three probable sons of Thomas and Jane Braman were James, Joseph and Thomas.
