About Thomas Walker Bullitt

Thomas W. Bullitt was born at Oxmoor in Jefferson County, Kentucky, in 1838, a representative of one of Kentucky's oldest and most distinguished families. Raised on the family estate, he attended Centre College, graduating in 1858. He then went to Philadelphia to read law with his brother, John C. Bullitt. He took classes at the law department of the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1861 was licensed to practice at the Philadelphia bar. In 1862, however, he returned to Kentucky, joining the forces under General John Hunt Morgan of the Confederacy. He was part of Morgans Ohio raid and was captured. After the war, Bullitt began the practice of law in Louisville, where he established himself as one of the leading practitioners of corporation law, helping to organize institutions like the Fidelity Trust Company of Louisville and the Kentucky Title Company. He died in 1910 in Louisville.
