About Thomas Coates

Thomas Coates was the son of Moses Coates and wife Susanna Weldon, Quakers. He was born on December 22, 1716 in Ireland. He emigrated to Pennsylvania with his parents in 1717.

Thomas married Sarah Miler, daughter of Henry Miller and Sarah Deeble, on Mar 21, 1740/41 in Providence, Chester, Pennsylvania. Sarah Miller was born in England and died 1749 in Pennsylvania.

Thomas was mentioned in his father's will dated 1761, receiving a gift of wearing apparel.

Thomas’ farm was in Caln Township, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. The house was still standing in 1904. The portion of his farm where son Samuel lived was sold in 1824 to a Samuel Torbet who, in turn, sold it to former president, James Buchanan. After Buchanan’s death it was sold to the Seltzer family. The other half of the farm was deeded by son Samuel to grandson Samuel and was eventually sold to the Fulton family

His own will is in the Chester Co. PA wills (abstracts 1713 - 1825), dated 16 Dec 1792. It was proven on Nov 1, 1797. "Remarks Coates, Thomas. E. Caln. 12-16-1792. Nov. 1, 1797. To son Jonathan 5 shillings. To son-in-law Joseph Gladden £60, and to his 4 youngest children, Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth and Susanna £10 each. To my son Samuel the plantation I live on and remainder of personal estate, he providing for my son Henry, during life, he 'being deprived of his right reason.' Friends John Hoopes and Robert Miller to have care over him. Executors Son Samuel, William Moode."

A Thomas Coates was listed in the Pennsylvania Gazette often from 1752 on starting as a Commodore and was listed as a Rear Admiral or Admiral by 1758, with as many as 20 ships under him. He often sailed from New York or Phildadelphia to Jamaica and other islands seemily to assure safe trade routes. (C-1750-1752) 9
