The identity of Thomas Day 's parents are unknown, In 1802 William Lansdown sold the property he owned in Buffalo Cove (now in Caldwell County, N.C.; at the time it was probably in Wilkes County), to Thomas Day, and moved to Wilkesboro.
From 1802 until 1857, most of the land in Buffalo Cove was either owned or occupied by either the Day or the Cottrell families. The 1850 tax list shows 6 landowners in the Buffalo Cove area: William Cottrell Jr., 505 acres, $900; James M. Cottrell, 540 acres, $500; William Cottrell Sr., 450 acres, $640 (with wife Lucy Day); Edward M. Day (Thomas's son), 182 acres, $350; David Campbell, 410 acres, $260 (with wife Elizabeth Day; David's mother was Sarah Lansdown, who was the daughter of William Lansdown, who sold property to Thomas Day); Sarah (Day) Nelson, 184 acres, $200.
